Based on the critical analysis of diverse documentary sources, especially meeting proceedings, this article discusses the performance of the Council of Rectors (CR) and the Council of Rectors of National Universities (CRUN) in Argentina. Given the fact that these two spaces of university coordination existed under the last two military dictatorships, it focuses on the problems of university coordination in periods of heteronomy, describing their general conditions of operation, comparing continuities and ruptures between both periods. Following the route of the proceedings the paper rebuilds the working agenda, the normative attributions, priorities, functionality with the governing regimes. Finally, it adresses the role played by the rectors and these two councils in university policies.
