The article proposes a theoretical debate about the categories of contradiction and antagonism, within the framework of the theory of hegemony, evaluating their vigor and topicality for contemporary analysis of populism. In this way, we will question Laclau's criticisms of Marxism, particularly concerning the category of contradiction, in order to rethink its validity and articulate it with different theoretical tools from Laclausian thought for the analysis of hegemony, observing the dynamics of antagonism and the identity constitution of the subject. Some of the questions that emerge are: How to deepen the analysis of the instituting logics of the political without losing sight of the gravitation of economic-structural factors? What are the relations between the people and the social classes? How to re-articulate the contributions of Laclau's thought within the framework of the Gramscian theory of hegemony?
