The eastern region of the Metropolitan Area of Toluca, made up of the municipalities of Lerma, Metepec, Ocoyoacac and San Mateo Atenco, in recent decades, has shown significant urban expansion and land use changes. The objective of this paper was to carry out a demographic and land use change assessment during 1980- 2017 period. Therefore, cartographic information was collected and the censuses of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography were consulted for the analysis of population dynamics. Orthophotographs and Basemap images from ArcGIS were used to prepare 1984 and 2017 cartography respectively. Based on the criteria reported by Jensen (2015), a visual photo-interpretation was made. The results show that the total population in the 1980- 2015 period increased by 308.262 people. Regarding land use in 1984, agriculture and forest predominated, and by 2017 agriculture continues, followed by artificial surface. In such period, there was a decrease of 35,74 %, in agriculture and 31,77 %, in water bodies while artificial surface increased 235,84 % and forests 4,9 %. The occupation model is influenced by geographical conditions and the disregard of territorial regulations.
