Abstract The results of the faunal analysis of Tembrao, an archaeological site located in a small valley at the foot of the Somuncurá plateau (Rio Negro province), are presented in this paper. The site is located in a dune, on both sides of the Tembrao stream. The presence of pottery and one radiocarbon date of a Lama guanicoe bone, place the chronology of the site in final Late Holocene. The faunal assemblage consists mainly of mammalian bone remains, principally artiodactyls: in particular, it is proposed that the remains of sheep were deposited by modern occupations of Tembrao site, while the guanacos would have been the main prey of the pre-hispanic hunter-gatherers. Finally, the availability of fauna resources nearby the site, especially guanacos on the Somuncurá plateau, and the implications of the presence of foreign elements are discussed.
