SPARA, F; ABBOTT, L; WOLFF, R  e  VERNENGO, E. Estimation of genetic parameters and their utility in selection for seed production in phalaris aquatica L. BAG, J. basic appl. genet. [online]. 2014, vol.25, n.1, pp.31-40. ISSN 1852-6233.

Phalaris aquatica L. (harding grass) is a perennial forage grass, which shows hardiness even in less favorable environments and that provides a high nutritional quality herbage mass. This species is a heterogeneus allogamous tetraploid, presenting great genotypic variability. The object of the present study was to determine genetic parameters for morphologic and reproductive characters during three years, and to evaluate the expected advances in selection for higher seed production. A progeny test of 10 clones was carried out during 2010, 2011 and 2012 in a completely randomized design with three replications. The characters measured were: number of panicles per plant (NP), flag leaf length (LHB), flag leaf width (AHB), panicle length (LP), panicle weight (PP), number of seeds per panicle (NS) and 1000 seeds weight (P1000). Repeatability, minimum number of measurements to predict the real value of the individual, heritability in broad sense and phenotypic correlations were estimated. According to the parameter estimated, ANOVA and Pearson coefficient were used. The characters with high repeatability were AHB (0.70), LP (0.88) and P1000 (0.88), with a minimum number of two measurements required and 80% of confidence. Heritability (H2) values were high for all characters and for the three years (0.68-0.99). Phenotypic correlations between the following characters were statistically significant, positive and high: PP and NS (0.86-0.93), LHB and AHB (0.56-0.82), and LHB and LP (0.48-0.63). Trusty values for most of the genetic parameters were obtained, and their utility in selection for seed production was discussed.
