LOPEZ, Silvia C. et al. Soil characteristics and metal concentration along an urbanization gradient in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Multequina [online]. 2006, vol.15, n.2, pp.69-80. ISSN 1852-7329.

Basic soil properties and heavy metal levels were analyzed in soil samples along an urbanization gradient in Buenos Aires. No important changes were detected on the pH, organic C and C/N ratio. Nevertheless high concentrations of P extractable distinguished the urban environment. Significant differences of the Pb mean values have been found in the three studied areas. Pb concentrations in Floresta neighbourhood were two times higher than the values registered in the centric area and seven times higher than the periurban. Cd, Cr and Ni levels were more homogeneous and below argentine and international guidelines in all locations. In general higher variability of data allows is related to the urban environment. High concentrations and outliers data of Fe, Pb and P were found in urban sites (downtown and residential neighbourhood) compared to periurban site. Main source of pollution can be linked to traffic density, fuel combustion and dumping of waste.
