ROGER, Enrique; PALACIO, M.; CORIA, O.  e  DIAZ, R.. Notes about urban flora grown in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. Multequina [online]. 2016, vol.25, n.1, pp.29-41. ISSN 1852-7329.

Tree planting is a key factor in improvement of life quality. Urban forestry and ethnobotany can provide tools for arborization schemes, including the stage of selection of species. There are criteria for selecting appropriate species, but alternative uses and citizen participation are rarely considered. The objective of this study is to update the catalog of flora grown in Santiago del Estero, and to evaluate its abundance and relative frequency, uses assigned and associated urban knowledge. Twenty-one districts where the study was conducted were randomly selected, taking over 36% of the total area of the city. Joined presence, frequency and abundance indices were calculated; neighbors were consulted on the use and reason for the choice of species. Forty-seven new crop species (137 specimens) were surveyed. Selection criteria were grouped as follows: aesthetic, 86%; utilitarian, 11%; functional, 3%. The 85% of respondents did not know about alternative uses. Much of the success in managing of green areas depends on their functionality and public participation; therefore, greater contribution of citizens in future tree-planting plans is expected.
