In this work we analyze the teaching and learning of germination in two scenarios: the use of containers for germination (germinators), and the production of plants in environments close to schools. We discuss about obstacles that are pointed out in the educational literature for the learning of similar topics in botany and didactic proposals that follow a strict disciplinary logic, such as those in force on germination. Based on theoretical frameworks of environmental education (currents of bioregionalism and sustainability), we point out that decontextualization in botany teaching not only generates situations of flagrant conceptual contradictions (such as the lack of germination of seeds in arid and semi-arid zones) but could be one of the causes of “plant blindness” in students. Considering a teaching case in a severely desertified semi-arid region of Neuquén (Argentina), we proposed that the restoration of society-nature relationships can constitute a good context to generate enthusiasm for germination, botany and the plant world in general.
