PEREZ, María Claudia. Learning in carbohydrate counting in children with diabetes treated in the interzonal acute care hospital "Sor María Ludovica" in La Plata city. Diaeta [online]. 2014, vol.32, n.148, pp.39-42. ISSN 1852-7337.

The interzonal acute care hospital specialized in Pediatrics "Sor Maria Ludovica" in La Plata City is considered a centre of reference and derivation when coming to type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (DM1), where historically the Conventional (1 or 2 fixed-dose) insulin Treatment was used , together with indication of structured diet. In this Hospital, the need to initiate a multidisciplinary program to intensify the treatment for type 1 Diabetes (DM1) arose. The Intensified Treatment (IT) is one with multiple insulin injections, in which the Carbohydrate Counting method (CHC) is used, relating the carbohydrates consumed at each meal with the application of fast-acting insulin. Even though it gives greater freedom and flexibility to the diet, its implementation requires a strict nutritional control, individual and personalized of each patient and his/her family, in order to achieve adherence to CHC. Nutrition education was carried out through frequent nutritional consultations and workshops on diabetes and CHC. It was observed that in a group of patients with DM1 properly educated and motivated in CHC, it is possible to implement the IT and, through it, reduce HbA1c. If teaching in CHC is applied from the onset, the results are even better. This therapy gives patients greater flexibility in food choices, improving the quality of life and satisfaction with the treatment for diabetes.
