VALACCO, Marcel et al. Vertebroplastia percutánea: ¿un método útil en el tratamiento de las fracturas vertebrales por osteoporosis? Estudio prospectivo de 34 pacientes. Rev. Asoc. Argent. Ortop. Traumatol. [online]. 2009, vol.74, n.1, pp.20-25. ISSN 1852-7434.

Background: Percutaneous vertebroplasty has been widely used for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Relief of pain and quality of life following percutaneous vertebroplasty, however, remain incompletely defined. The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy and durability of percutaneous vertebroplasty for the treatment of back pain associated with osteoporotic vertebral fractures.  Methods: A prospective study was performed on 34 patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures between May 2002 and May 2005. We analyzed patients' average age, level of pain using the visual analogue scale, and made a pre and post-op functional assessment. Results: Thirty-nine vertebroplasties were performed in 34 patients. Pain relief was seen in almost all patients. Patients'average age was 72. Twenty-five patients were treated within three months of the occurrence of the injury, the remaining 9 were treated three months after the fracture. The functional evaluation showed good results in 29 patients (85%), without any procedure-related complications. Three adjacent vertebral compression fractures occurred in three patients in the follow-up. Conclusiones: Rapid and substantial pain relief and quality of life improvement were noted following percutaneous vertebroplasty, and were maintained for at least six months.
