GOYENECHE, Rodolfo; PRIMOMO, Claudio; LAMBERT, Norberto e MISCIONE, Horacio. Correction of bone angle deformities: experimental analysis with dynamic and static devices. Rev. Asoc. Argent. Ortop. Traumatol. [online]. 2009, vol.74, n.4, pp.375-381. ISSN 1852-7434.
Background: limb angle deformity correction with hemiepiphysiodesis should always be considered in children. The placement of a dynamic device (figure of 8 staple) is more advantageous than conventional staples in providing stable fixation on both sides of the physis, acting mainly on hemi-physis growth in the implant insertion side. The purpose of our study is to compare the efficacy of both devices (static and dynamic) for angle modifications. Methods: 17, 8-week-old rabbits were used for the study. Each rabbit received a figure of 8 plate in the distal femur and a staple in the contralateral femur. At eight weeks the deformity produced by each system was evaluated from a radiological and histological perspective. Results: Axial deformity: staples produced 48.1° average deviation and figure of 8 plates 49.8° average deviation (p = 0.44). Final longitudinal femoral growth: staples 83.17 and figure of 8 plate 85.7 (p = 0.0042). Histological analysis: no significant differences were found between both femurs in the same animal, although slight inter-animal differences were found. Conclusions: correction was faster with conventional staples, The long-term efficacy of both epiphysiodesis systems is similar. Longitudinal growth inhibition is lower with the figure of 8 plate.
