HERNANDEZ PENALOZA, Amor. The writing and the feminine character in the historical fiction Juanamanuela mucha mujer. Cuad. CILHA [online]. 2009, vol.10, n.2. ISSN 1852-9615.

This paper explores the confrontation between literature and history in Juanamanuela mucha mujer by Martha Mercader. This novel tells the life of an historical female character of the XIX century: Juana Manuela Gorriti. The author describes Juanamanuela, as a woman in constant evolution, identity that responds to her own will and desire, in function of personal experiences, according to XIX century´s women everyday life, but through the perspective of a XX century´s woman. The main character is a fiction lady writer that discloses the differences that exist between the way men see women and the way women see themselves. Thus, the author fulfills her literary project: she makes evident and judge women´s role into an authoritarian and male chauvinist society, but taking into account mayor issues such as women specific creativity. Martha Mercader uses in  Juanamanuela mucha mujer, Juana Manuela Gorriti´s work and in the analysis of past events, denouncing some social injustices. She attempts to rebuild Manuela Gorriti´s life with the purpose of explaining and understanding the contemporary Latin-American women role frustrations while recognizing the aura of Gorriti´s as an exceptional woman in Argentinean literature history.
