Jennifer Butler's study analizes the impact of violence against women and their bodies in armed conflict situations creating awareness about the connections between militarism and sexual exploitation. The purpose of the article is to dispel the myths and examine the realities of the sex industries that develop around U.S. military installations by listening to the perspectives and stories of women who have earned a living selling sex to U.S. servicemen. While prostitution is ubiquitous around military installations in many countries, this article focuses on U.S. military bases in Asia, where the most research and advocacy have been done. It presents excerpts from the recorded interviews of women living around U.S. bases in Korea and Okinawa, Japan. It examines the impact of Subic Naval Base and Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines, which occupied Subic Bay and Pampanga respectively until 1992, spawning the sex industries of Olongapo and Angeles. This article also touches on Thailand as a rest and recreation spot developed for U.S. servicemen during the Vietnam War and still frequented by the U.S. military. By way of conclusion the author emphasizes and promotes solidarity between women to confront sexist violence. Butler considers that women working in militarized prostitution and scholars can together uncover a complex picture of the causes and solutions to militarized prostitution as a part of the sex industry. That complex picture must include a close examination of male dominance and oppression, as well as many factores including race, class, culture, government economic policies, corporate practices, international development policies, social disruption, and military culture.
