MELENDEZ, Ana Soledad. Human occupation and paleoenviroment in the lower basin of El Bolsón River (Dpto. Beléon, Catamarca): An approach from geoarchaeology. Zaranda ideas [online]. 2015, vol.13, n.2, pp.107-118. ISSN 1853-1296.
The El Bolsón valley, in the province of Catamarca has a long history of human occupation. Almond-shape projectile points, and even the finding of a fish-tail projectile point, evidence the occurrence of hunter-gatherers activities during the early and middle Holocene. Nonetheless, it is clearly from the Formative period (1st millennium BC-AC) that the occupation of the space is intensified, and large transformations of the landscape are generated, living spaces being associated to a diversity of continuously occupied agricultural production facilities spread along the valley. In this paper, the results of geoarchaeological studies carried out in the lower basin of El Bolsón river are presented. From these studies, the way in which the landscape observed at the present time has been shaped by the geomorphologic and environmental processes, along with the human occupation of the valley, can be assessed.
