Under what conditions does public opinion support the president’s impeachment and under what conditions does it create a popular shield to protect the executive? The probability that citizens will support the executive depends not only on presidential approval, but also on the legal culture prevailing in a certain historical context. Beliefs indicating that the executive branch can operate above the law if it does so to benefit the people promote the emergence of public attitudes in support of the president. A survey conducted in Ecuador in 2012 allows us to test this hypothesis using logistic regression and propensity score matching.
