Curricular design is a vital process for academia because it defines the structure and defines the key components for the development of content that will provide competencies for future professionals. However, despite the leading role it plays within higher education, there is no methodological consensus for curricular construction, due to the different approaches depending on the function assigned to the designer.
This article presents the theoretical approach based on the criteria of several authors with respect to the ideological postures to carry out the curricular design and then presents the methodology applied by the graphic design careers of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, PUCE, whose purpose is to project the profession beyond the recognition of the functions of the graphic designer so that it evolves towards communication design as a way of adapting to the new communicational paradigm in force and framed in the new media of digital information exchange.
