Blockchain and its most promising application, smart contracts, are disruptive tools that can be very useful for design protection from registration to marketing. However, we are still at an early stage. For a complete implementation of this tool it is still necessary to face certain obstacles as well as to achieve blockchain and smart contracts standards focused on industrial property and internationally accepted. On the other hand, it will be necessary, regarding the application of this technology to bear in mind not only the peculiarities of the legal protection granted to the design but also the existence of potential complementary protections by other IP figures.
