This paper proposes to interrogate first two O'Donnell's works, Modernization and authoritarianism and The Bureaucratic- Authoritarianism State, regarding them as another chapter in the tense relation between capitalism and democracy, relation that has structured one of the richest debates of the 20th century. These texts receive a significant relevancy for us, since these explain the form that assumes this tension in countries of late modernization as those of Latin America, where the game incorporates other complexities and certain external actors play a transcendent role. Furthermore, the interpretation of the Argentine process in the ‘60s, is a good place to understand the subsequent failures that marked our country, and the thin rope where it can spend a solution of commitment. Having as guide these writings we will work on four axes from which we will follow this tension along the recent history of our country: capitalism, state, menemism, peronism.
