Evaluation is a common practice in the field of education and has also gained momentum in the agenda of educational policies in the region starting in the 1990s. Yet in both planes of notion, evaluation parameters related to control, punishment and the predominance of a single point centered on errors still persist. The proposal is to cover some basic conceptual notions that identify the terms of tensions running through today's conception of educational evaluation and, based on this, propose and promote richer assessment practices to be established in areas of learning and reflection oriented in improving education. Both the generation of greater technical capabilities to develop more complex evaluation processes along with strengthening the legitimacy of these are currently the most important challenges in the area therefore, the comprehensive discussion of these issues and review of current practices are a valuable starting point for building a learning space.
