This article describes how the principles of complexity theory related to self-emergence and connectivity have been used to report on our recent work in Scottish physical education. We argue that these principles of complexity show their validity in postmodern times characterized by uncertainty, multiplicity and contradiction (Fernández-Balboa, 1997). We take as an example the development and implementation of a Physical Education Development Program in Scotland to affirm that the principles of complex learning (Light, 2008; Morrison, 2008) can be used to structure curricula and foster pedagogical achievements. This example, taken from practice, highlights the ways in which a complexity- oriented approach to learning is a challenge for the hierarchical, reductionist, and behavioral notions of learning that have long been so entrenched in the field of Physical education (Light, 2008). At the same time, we pay attention to critical questions that have arisen regarding the utility of structuring educational practices with emerging theories, such as the theory of complexity (Davis and Sumara, 2006).
