WEINBERG, Liliana. José Martí: chronicler of the invisible. CELEHIS [online]. 2018, n.36, pp.1-10. ISSN 2313-9463.

This article proposes a reading of the New York chronicle written by José Martí, dedicated to the "New exhibition of the impressionist painters," that was sent to the director of the newspaper La Nación of Buenos Aires on July 2nd, 1886, and published on August 17th of the same year. This work looks to unweave some of the many threads of meaning that come together in the text, such as the aesthetic glare that the author-witness experiments and transmits to his readers, or the vivid description and the assertive and early appraisement Martí offered of the  impressionist painting. It is necessary to add other elements, such as the fact that Martí noticed very early that the axis of the art market was in the process of moving from Paris to New York. But, above all, this article notes the complex battle that he had to fight within and beyond his text to compatibilize the expectations of the chronicler and the pulsion of the artist-writer; the many rhythms, and the diverse pushes and pulls between the need to inform and communicate, and the interest in interpreting and participating; between walking by and staying; the tension between only providing note of a series of numbers and data, or slowing down into a reflection about the productive struggle the artists were having with nature and light.
