In this work, we seek to analyze two competitive uses of land of the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires. On one hand, the intensive productive use. In the other hand, the residential use.

From a conceptual point of view, we start from the perspective of the Periurban Agriculture, as a specific place in the periurban area of Buenos Aires. However, we may ask: is it possible to sustain this small Periurban Agriculture taking in to account the complex context in which it is developed?

To answer this question, we have to analyze different processes that are developed in the periurban region. In particular, the so–called expansion residental processes have grew rapidly since 1970 with a major role played by the State.

We use an approach that combines urban and rural studies. Furthermore, we use a qualitative methodology based on the analysis of primary and secondary sources. Our main conclusions reflect the role of the State in the deployment of contradictory logic in the periurban.
