FANDOS, Cecilia A.. The Puna as a political space. Indigenous representation, institutions and conflicts (Jujuy, 1820 decade). Rev. hist. am. argent. [online]. 2022, vol.57, n.2, pp.153-190. Epub 23-Nov-2022. ISSN 2314-1549. http://dx.doi.org/10.48162/rev.44.031.
Focused on the context of the emergence of the provinces as new political entities in the River Plate space, starting in 1820, this article deals with the participation and representation of the population of the Puna de Jujuy in the emerging political communities. This region includes an indigenous territoriality that at that time continued the process of transformation from subjects of the Republic of Indians to citizens of a Nation. The central objective is to analyze the behavior of these "indigenous political subjects" in this context, seeking to answer the following basic questions: how did they intervene, with what meanings, limitations and scope. For this, we analyze the intervention of these subjects in a "jurisdictional" lawsuit for the appointment of the sub-delegate with the Jujuy council (1826-1828), and their participation in the 1826 elections. Based on official sources from the Historical Archives of Salta and Jujuy, the study reconstructs the institutional political functioning in which this political space is inserted and the practices deployed around the elections of representatives; and behaviors and discourses typical of agents of corporative tradition in the post-revolutionary public sphere of Independence are revealed.
