This paper analyzes the influence that the adoption of a modern system of sugar production by Cuba, known as "centrales azucareros" had in the spirit of Brazilian sugar producers. I intends to show what was the impact on Brazil of Cuba's transformation into a major producer of sugar worldwide. The paper also seeks to explain how the information available on Cuba was exployed to encourage the adoption of more modern techniques for Brazilian sugar producers, making use of the idea of Cuban sugar production as a model that should be copied by Brazil. The research explores sources that define the outline of the Cuban influence, such as speech of sugar producers, technicians and Brazilian statesmen in Congress, scientific periodicals and technical reports.
