Washington's narrative on the characteristics and value of democracy is one of the elements that frames American bilateral relations with Latin American countries. In the forty years since Argentina's return to democracy, this was no exception. Therefore, the objective of this article is to revisit the different ways in which the United States conceptualized democracy and the impact this has had on Argentine foreign policy since the late 1970s. This review supports our hypothesis, which argues that exceptionalism, the preferences of U.S. presidents towards different schools of thought and International Relations theories used as sources to design Foreign Policy, in addition to the material interests which sought to strengthen, maintain, or impose hegemony, are components of the “chain of causality" or the "meaning orientation" of the U.S. narrative on democracy.
