Along an arch of 120 years, the axis of transit and the place of permanence imbricated in the Providencia avenue of Santiago de Chile form an interesting record of transformation and adaptation of a high intensity urban piece. The alternatives of this avenue within the structure of the capital city bear witness of a place of pre-urban configuration that originates outside the foundational layout and serves as a link with the mountain range and as the seat of complementary activities to the city. Later, towards the end of the 19th century, it becomes the axis of one of the most important garden suburbs of the urban expansion, and at the end of the 20th century it operates as a main place of centrality, articulates the new suburbs in expansion towards the east, and offers some of the highest quality spaces in Santiago. Its meaning, its temporality and its expression as a suburb have played, from the beginning until today, a fundamental role in its own identity and in the Santiago metropolitan expression.
