GIACOMELLI, María Julieta. Religion, state, assistance and society: an analysis of their relationships from the features of women’s confinement in Azul (1918-1932). Av. Cesor [online]. 2018, vol.15, n.19, pp.1-23. ISSN 1514-3899.

The nuns of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd carried out duties related to housing and imprisoning a female population of a variable age range in asylums. Their locations adopted the name of “women’s prison” in several Argentinian cities. In this article it is presented a case study of an asylum in Azul, between 1918 and 1932. The inquiry of that period –which begins with the idea of the incorporation of the sisters to this city and ends with the inauguration of the Good Shepherd’s Asylum– allows to have a glimpse on relationships between society, assistance, state and religion in this city. Likewise, their features and political, economic and social transformations that modified traditional tasks of this congregation are explored. Local press is specially used in order to accomplish this work. This source is complemented, furthermore, by Minors Defense’s minutes and judicial archives. Departing from a case that has not been studied, the article’s objective is providing new approaches to the research on Sisters of the Good Shepherd’s actions developed in Argentina regarding female confined population.
