LOPEZ, Mara e FRYDMAN, Judith. Guillain-Barré syndrome associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in a child. A case report. Argentinian j. respiratory physical therapy [online]. 2022, vol.4, n.2, pp.42-48. ISSN 2618-4095. http://dx.doi.org/10.58172/ajrpt.v4i2.210.
Introduction:
A close relation between the SARS-CoV-2 and neurological complications has been reported in the literature. The study aims to describe the progress and treatment of the motor, swallowing, and respiratory functions of a child with Guillain-Barré syndrome related to SARS-CoV-2 infection and a tracheostomy.
Case presentation:
A 2-year-old male patient was presumptively diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome. He had a progressive decrease in muscle strength, associated with respiratory distress, and required endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, and tracheostomy. Fifty-six days after initiating weaning, he was successfully weaned from mechanical ventilation, and 7 days later, he was decannulated. He required a total of 68 days of mechanical ventilation and received physical therapy from the beginning. At discharge, the patient was able to sit independently and stand with support, while he continued to have distal upper and lower limb weakness.
Conclusion:
This study described the progress of a patient with Guillain-Barré syndrome and its association with SARS-CoV-2 infection. He had motor impairment and required mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy. At hospital discharge, he achieved weaning from ventilatory support, decannulation, and oral feeding, but continued to exhibit distal motor deficits.
