This article presents a research project which studied the scholarship system at University and its connection to students` academic career. For this research, both sociology of education and educational policy theoretical frameworks have been adopted to study this issue as a result of the interaction between social inequality and education. The objectives of this paper are to provide a description of the characteristics of the University scholarship system in the province of Tucumán, and to identify in the students' accounts not only their subjective construction of the scholarships but also their possible effect on the students' academic career. Qualitative methodological instruments have been used, being the detailed analysis of both documents and interviews the principal tools in the study. In connection to the interviews, in order to describe the students' academic career, a biographic perspective has been adopted. The results related to the scholarship programs reveal that they bear a powerful historical mark linked to deficit and meritocracy, in spite of the discontinuity in its achievement throughout time. It has also been noticed that scholarship programs have their origin on a focalized, compensatory social policy within the University environment, and that there are perceivable regularities in the scholarship demand in the province of Tucumán. As for the scholarship accounts provided by the students' on scholarship, it can be observed some common features linked to disadvantages and heroism. It can also be observed how the scholarship has an impact on the students' subjectivity, acting in a way as "social consent" for them to gain access to higher education.
