We know that proteinuria in dogs and cats is associated with renal morbidity and that it can be used as a risk marker for the evolution of renal disease and also for the response to curative treatments. There is a controversy about the values that proteinuria can reach in healthy dogs. The objective of this study was to establish the limits of the concentrations of urinary proteins that can occur in clinically healthy dogs using analytical methods available in the veterinary clinical analysis laboratory. The interpretation of the results obtained in the urinalysis requires their normalization regarding the hydration status of the patient. For this reason the data obtained from proteinuria are normalized to the concentration of urinary creatinine. The protein/creatinine ratio indicates the concentration of urinary protein normalized to hydration status of the patient. Seventy four urine samples from clinically healthy dogs and dogs with several diseases were analyzed. They were grouped based on proteinuria < 300 mg/l (45 samples) and proteinuria > 300 mg/l (29 samples). In all samples the concentration protein/concentration creatinine ratio was determined. The results showed that proteinuria up to 300 mg/l associated with a protein/creatinine ratio of less than 0.300 does not necessarily indicate a pathological proteinuria.
