VASQUEZ MELENDEZ, MA. Antonio López de Santa Anna: between the continuity and change of the public official ceremonies in Mexico City. Andes [online]. 2006, n.17, pp.353-381. ISSN 1668-8090.

Among the New Spain territories, Mexico City was where the public official ceremonies dedicated to the members of the Bourbon dynasty mainly took place. Nevertheless, traditional festivities and their promoters were questioned at the beginning of the Independent Period. Banquets, bullfights, comedies, and equestrian promenades were part of the old colonial protocol which had to be adapted to the republican precepts. Monarchs were replaced by patriotic heroes and   caudillos (regional bosses); the high bureaucracy members marching along the streets during the ceremonies disappeared in front of the military corporations; fidelity and obedience principles toward the monarchical system diluted in front of the modern principles of union, peace and independence.  The boom of the nineteenth century journalism allowed the publication of literary works related to the events and characters referred to during the celebrations. Fireworks developed remarkably as well.  In such a way, in the public official ceremonies held in Mexico City, it is possible to observe traits of change and continuity, which are characteristic of a society in transition.
