TELL, Sonia. Land Conflicts in the “Indian Towns” of Cordoba: The Town of San Marcos between the End of the Seventeenth Century and the Beginning of Nineteenth Century. Andes [online]. 2012, vol.23, n.1. ISSN 1668-8090.

In this paper we study land conflicts in the “Indian towns” of the Province of Cordoba in the eighteenth century, from a case study: the pueblo de indios of San Marcos. Based on a lawsuit which lasted for four decades (between 1769 and 1809), we reconstruct the strategies of the elite groups to legalize the usurpation of indigenous land, and the indigenous strategies to recover them, appealing to the title of demarcation and allocation of reduction lands made in 1694 by order of the inspector Luján de Vargas, and the support of the Royal Audience of Buenos Aires. We also reconstruct some features of the land tenure, the authority system and the organization of communal activities of production, in order to reassess some conclusions drawn from previous studies about the advanced destructuring of the Indian towns in the jurisdiction of Cordoba by the end of colonial times.
