MARTINS, Paulo Henrique. La teoría democrática y las bases anti-utilitaristas de la asociación. Rev. argent. sociol. [online]. 2008, vol.6, n.10, pp.13-33. ISSN 1669-3248.

Social scientists in Latin America share a common feeling on the catastrophic effects of mercantilist and individualistic ideologies in the legitimation of political decisions that foster growing economic and social inequalities, and destabilize democratic processes. The creation of this anti-utilitarian and anti-reductionist intellectual agreement has become a key element to review the tenets of modernization and democracy in the region. Focusing on the topic of participatory democracy, this paper argues that the difficulties of extending the practice of associationism lie in the lack of theoretical insights for the emergence of inter-subjective pacts and the symbolic dimension of social action. Thus, an anti-utilitarian critique is a relevant approach to advance this debate.

Palavras-chave : Participatory Democracy; Anti-Utilitarianism; Intersubjectivity; Donation; Association.
