MEDRANO, Celeste e TOLA, Florencia. Cuando humanos y no-humanos componen el Pasado: Ontohistoria en el Chaco. Avá [online]. 2016, n.29, pp.99-129. ISSN 1851-1694.
In this paper we reflect on historicity and its articulation with the Qom (Toba) people’s ontology. For the Toba people of the Argentinean Chaco, the world is comprised by a great diversity of entities (human and nonhuman) that communicate with each other. This communication is very ancient and, for this reason, non-human beings have influenced, and they still have influence on human beings’ life and history. In this paper, we will focus on some stories we were told by elders of the Central Chaco. These stories refer to key moments of the conquest, colonization and present indigenous claims. We will show that the reconstruction which Qom people make of their past is rooted in ontological assumptions. In fact, society and human history cannot be understood apart from some non-human agencies (animals, dead people, stars, etc.).
