DELPINO, María Florencia. The argentine oil during Onganía's years: the new Hydrocarbons Law. Internal and external repercussions. Ciclos hist. econ. soc. [online]. 2018, vol.29, n.51, pp.1-20. ISSN 1851-3735.
On June 23rd, 1967, a new Hydrocarbons Law was enacted. It subsumed the Argentine oil industry to the interests of United States companies. From a development perspective, it allowed short-term economic surpluses and, consequently, represented a very important setback for industrialization process in the country. Although United States companies influenced a lot in the exploitation, commercialization, industrialization and transportation of hydrocarbons in Argentina since 1920, the measures adopted during Onganía's de facto presidenceestablished conditions of privilege for them to the detriment of the state company YPF. When Adalbert Krieger Vasena assumed as Minister of Economy, the search to rebuild a link with the United States to insert Argentina into the international relations as a country aligned with Washington, was intensified. Thus, law 17.319 constitutes an example to study the framework between economic policy and international relations from 1966 to 1970. This work aims to analyze the approach between both countries from the Hydrocarbons Law and its repercussions in Argentina and the United States. Based on a multidisciplinary methodological approach that involves international relations, economic history and political science, we analize the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Relations, the local and United States press, and the contributions of journalists and researchers.
