The press constitutes a discursive space (Heller, 2010) for the production and reproduction of sociolinguistic representations and linguistic ideologies, in which several issues are defined and debated; among them, which language themes are of “public interest”, which are the “authoritative” voices to approach them, which linguistic forms are correct or adequate (and which ones not). The purpose of this article is to analyze, from the glottopolitical perspective, the dominant representations of the Spanish language and the agents that operate as authorized voices to deal with current language debates in mainstream Argentine newspapers. To this end, I first survey the more prominent language topics covered by the online version of three of the main newspapers in Argentina, in order to map the thematic repertoire that constitutes “the agenda”, and what becomes “of interest” to public opinion. Subsequently, based on this corpus of news clippings, I analyze the issues that have received the most attention in Clarín, which has the highest circulation of the three newspapers, to explain how it positions itself and manages the discourse with respect to issues related to language.
