Abstract
ANDREANI, Héctor. Estado, capital y proceso sociolingüístico del quichua santiagueño (siglos xix-xxi). RASAL lingüíst. [online]. 2022, vol.2022, n.1, pp.37-67. ISSN 2618-3455. http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.56683/rs221054.
Research on the Quichua language spoken in Santiago del Estero, Argentina, has mainly dealt with language shift, and there is, with few exceptions, a notable absence of a focus on the contemporary maintenance conditions of this variety. Based on archive materials, recent historiographic-sociological contributions and our own ethnographic data, we propose a comprehensive hypothesis about the social process shaping this variety, from the 19th century to the present.
We analyze the evolution of the social composition, the formation of the relative overpopulation, and the driving forces that have impacted on bilingual uses (Quichua-Spanish). We focus on two determining and usually overlooked elements: the State and the capital, in their different manifestations and impacts, from which we collect indications of linguistic maintenance, which are highly complementary to language shift. Finally, we project the resulting characterization of this hypothesis onto many American minority languages.
Keywords : uses of the Quichua language; linguistic maintenance; driving forces; relative overpopulation; state / capitalist processes.
