This paper is based on Kaztman’s AVEO approach (assets, vulnerability and opportunity structure) and presents evidence on educational segmentation in Argentina using data from the National Household Expenditure Survey (2017-8). The educational segments are identified using a combination of two criteria: the magnitude of the household’s expenditure on education and the management (public or private) of the school the children attend. We present evidence that households in each segment differ not only in their socioeconomic characteristics but also in terms of their access to cultural goods and services, as well as in their participation in spheres of social interaction (work, health, security, transport, recreation). This can be interpreted as evidence of social fragmentation.
