TROVERO, Juan Ignacio. De la síntesis a la crítica: tensiones y desplazamientos en la sociología latinoamericana. Una historia de dos congresos (ISA, 1966-ALAS, 1969). Sociohistórica [online]. 2023, n.52, e209. ISSN 1852-1606.  http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.24215/18521606e209.

The article focuses on the theoretical-epistemological debate aroused during the 1960’s in Latin American Sociology, around the conception and social function of Sociology as a science. To do this, it analyzes in a comparative key a series of documents produced by the sociologists Gino Germani and Pablo González Casanova around two important congresses: the VI ISA World Congress of Sociology (Evian, 1966) and the IX Congreso de la Asociación Latinoamericana de Sociología (Mexico, 1969). The objective of the article is to shed light on the tensions and displacements that were traversing trough a good part of Latin American sociology at the time, and that led to a theoretical-epistemological reorientation of its main lines. It is argued that the conception of the discipline as a “science for social intervention” (or “scientific sociology”) was losing ground against a perspective oriented towards “social transformation” (or a sociology “in and of the Latin American crisis”), which did not mean a complete denial of the first, but its critical overcoming.
