Digital technologies and digital media have penetrated the civic and political dimensions, raising questions about their impact on democracy and citizenship. Youth studies have debated whether digital environments favour the formation of new forms of "being citizens" or new forms of political actions.

This paper, first, reviews the literature on digital civic-political engagement to analyse this debate. Then, moving away from deterministic positions on technology, and giving relevance to the sociocultural perspective, we present an empirical, qualitative, and descriptive investigation of the representations, meanings and practices involved in civic engagement and political life in digital environments, of young people from service and intermediate classes in the Conurbano Bonaerense of Argentina. Recognising that the processes of digitalisation of society do not occur equally and that young people are heterogeneous, we restricted our observation to a particular social sector, considering Goldthorpe's (2010) scheme of social classes. We also focus on young people who do not participate in political parties or other types of collective organisations, problematising their civic-political engagement.

We conducted in-depth interviews approached by thematic analysis. The results delineate the tensions of meaning, potentialities and new problems that are interwoven between a social sector of young people, digital environments, civic engagement, and politics.
